(St Teresa's) Church Dublin, Ireland
Angel of Peace on Bell Tower
Blessing and Unveiling - Angel of Peace
The Carmelite Community at St. Teresa's are happy to announce that an newly commissioned Angel of Peace was blessed and unveiled on the 1st January 2008 by the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Diarmuid Martin.
Due to the success of the Peace Process in Northern Ireland, and to celebrate a new era of Peace for our country, the community decided to mark this event by placing an Angel of Peace on the Bell Tower at St. Teresa's in the heart of the capital city.
We commissioned Imogen Stewart whose gifts and achievements as Sculptor are well known to us all to design and create an Angel of Peace. This well known artist came to Ireland from Germany more than fifty years ago and has carved her own niche in Irish art. Her work is available throughout the country in church and market square, in academic settings and in private collections. She has worked with us for many years, advising us on preserving the artifacts in the church and has sculptured a number of statues for the Carmelite family. She was very enthusiastic about this new project and set about creating drawings and models of the Angel. She completed a striking bronze Angel which was installed in the Bell Tower before Christmas. We are confident that this project will enhance the bell tower and the Church entrance around Johnsons Court and is an inclusive symbol which will reach out to all.
St. Teresa's church is a well loved place of peace in Dublin City. It has always been a place of welcome to all visitors, shoppers, office workers and anyone who visits the city centre and we wish to continue this tradition into the future. The Carmelite community believes that this beautiful Bronze Angel of Peace expresses an openness and welcome to all in the city and country and will be a symbol of Hope, Peace and Hospitality for all.
Grafton St, Dublin is a place full of life and vibrancy. It has more than its share of top class stores selling almost everything a shopper is looking for. On the street, there are plenty of very talented street entertainers to cheer the heart. Being a pedestrian street, it is always crowded and bussling with hectic shoppers and people hurrying to purchase the latest bargain or fashion.
But even the most ardent shopper can get tired of the rush and hastle of this busy street. Many head for or discover by accident a little oasis of peace and calm; St. Teresa’s Church. Located down a side alley tucked away between Grafton Street and Clarendon Street, it’s just around the corner from Bewley’s. It is amazing the number of people from all over the city and indeed from all over the country who know and love St. Teresa’s and appreciate the peace and calm they experience here.
St. Teresa’s have been serving the people of Dublin for over two hundred years. It offers now and will continue to offer a place of peace and prayer for all in need.
